The Observer Ethical Awards 2010: Winners Announced [ 11-06-2010 ]
On Thursday 10th June the winners of the 2010 Observer Ethical Awards, in association with Ecover, were announced at a star-studded ceremony in London, presented by Colin Firth and Lucy Siegle.
Over 8,000 entries were received this year representing the enormous variety of solutions and ideas dealing with environmental and social justice in the UK. The winners demonstrated that extra ingenuity and creativity that caught the attention of our judges and set them apart from the intense competition. Pestival, the winner of the conservation project of the year, created a unique way of educating people about the importance of insects to our ecology. Our judges were struck by the resource and ingenuity of the Recyclists who, after school, collect their neighbour’s household waste and take it the local recycling centre.
There were also victories last night for big businesses showing a determination to become green; B & Q were rewarded for role they play in demystifying ecological issues to the mass consumer and were awarded ethical business of the year. Ethical fashion label From Somewhere won the prestigious ethical fashion category for its best selling viper dress developed and sold through Tesco.
The Observer readers had a hand in voting for the winners and rewarded: Local Roots and Wellie Boots as local retailer of the year; Riverford Organic as online retailer of the year; Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall as campaigner of the year and Caroline Lucas as politician of the year.
Lucy Siegle, Ethical Living Correspondent, The Observer said: 'It's amazing to see how much these awards have grown over the last five years. I was delighted by the number and quality of the entries this year. The winners have fought off really tough competition and to be able to celebrate their achievements with our excellent panel of judges at the V&A has been very special.'
